Troubleshooting: Baking with Silicone

Author: Amateur Cook // Category:

Recently, I was gifted two silicone baking items - a heart-shaped cake pan and some muffin cups. Well, I had never used silicone before, and I had some questions. I found a great article at About.com, which lays out the pros and cons. I also wanted to share answers to a few questions I had.

Q. Do you have to grease the dish?
A. Generally no, but I have read that for chocolate cake, you should grease lightly.

Q. How do I get the pan or the muffin cups into the oven?
A. Put the cake pan on a baking sheet and put the muffin cups in a muffin pan to provide the silicone with some stability when transporting to and from the oven.

Q. Do I still need to let my cake or muffins cool for 15 mins. before removing it from the pan?
A. Yes, but to get the cake out of the pan, you'll peel the silicone pan off of it, and it should slide out easily.
Those are the questions I had, but I'm sure there are more. Let me know if there are other burning questions that people want to know about silicone, and I'll do my best to answer them.
